Dwyfor Meirionnydd MP Liz Saville Roberts has presented Barclays with a petition signed by over 1,207 people opposing the closure of their branch in Tywyn, the last remaining bank in town.

Mrs Saville Roberts is also calling on Barclays to commit to providing the people of Tywyn with a new ATM machine and to providing customers with sufficient alternative banking arrangements as the bank prepares to cut its ties with the town.

Handing over the petition to Barclays in Tywyn, the MP was joined by local county councillor Anne Lloyd-Jones and town councillor Quentin Deakin.

Mrs Saville Roberts said: “This is just the latest round of bank closures to hit communities across Wales, coming at a time when many communities are being left cashless through the removal of hundreds of local ATMs.

“Over a thousand people have signed the petition which shows the strength of feeling in the town. Barclays Bank must not ignore the strength of public opinion on this.

“Nothing can replace walking into a bank branch and talking to someone across the counter. Despite the myth being peddled by high street banks that everyone banks online, people still want that personal contact.”
