A much-anticipated sculpture has been unveiled in Criccieth.
The piece, created by sculptor Howard Bowcott, was presented to the town on Saturday, 2 November. It brought to a climax a series of events presented as part of the ‘Unique Streets of Criccieth’.
Dr Catrin Jones, the clerk of Criccieth Town Council, told the Cambrian News what the Unique Streets of Criccieth project, and the sculpture, means for the town.
She said: “The unveiling of the sculpture is the culmination of months of collaborative work and events between the town council and Criccieth Business Forum on the Unique Streets project thanks to funding from Arloesi Gwynedd Wledig. It also marks a new beginning.
“This unique and interactive sculpture by Howard Bowcott in response to Robert Graves’ poem The Welsh Incident in 1929 and based in Criccieth was commissioned as part of our community plan which aims to make Criccieth an even better place for all ages to live and which welcomes visitors.”
The event was presented as the end of a celebratory period, praising everything positive about the town.
Giving a summary of the unveiling, Dr Jones said: “We were delighted at the turnout, which we estimate to be between 100 to 200, on what promised to be a wet and stormy day.
“The statue is designed to be interactive and it proved to be a great family attraction.
“The organisers were thoroughly delighted with the response.”
