A LECTURER from Dolgellau will today (Thursday) receive the Freedom of the City of London.

Angela Williams, who teaches at Wrexham Glyndwr University, will receive the honour at a ceremony in the capital’s Guildhall.

The Freedom of the City of London is an award which has a pedigree of almost 800 years.

It has a strong connection with Livery companies – bodies which represented a particular trade or profession in the City of London.

Angela, who was taught at Ysgol y Gader, had previously received the Freedom of the Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers, one of the Livery companies, while lecturing at Bangor University last year.

On her return to Wrexham Glyndwr University, where she is now a senior lecturer in Adult Nursing, Angela heard that her application to the City of London’s Court of Aldermen was successful.

The application is the final step before the Freedom of the City of London is awarded.

The Freedom of the City of London is an honour which has been bestowed on a diverse range of people - including Bill Gates, Bob Geldof, JK Rowling and Florence Nightingale – one of the first women to receive the Honorary Freedom of the City.

Angela, who is also a Queen’s Nurse, said: “This is a great honour – I am delighted. These honours are ultimately about working with communities and in communities, and that’s something I have devoted my career to.

“There really are a diverse range of people from right across the community who have received the Freedom of the City, and it is quite something to think you will be following in their footsteps.”

The BN (Hons) Registered Nurse (Adult) course Angela lectures on launched at Wrexham Glyndwr University last year.

The university was ranked second in the UK for student satisfaction in nursing in the 2018 Complete University Guide, and the last Adult Nursing cohort (2015-16) had a 95 per cent employability rate.

The programme is delivered at the Wrexham Glyndwr campus which boasts ample parking, excellent sports facilities and student accommodation.

There is a thriving academic community with opportunities to mix with students from other professional programmes such as occupational therapy, complementary therapies and social work.

Angela will be taking part in Wrexham Glyndwr University’s Open Day on June 9.
