LEGENDS of Aberystwyth Town Football Club are digging out their boots in preparation to play the last game ever on Park Avenue’s historic grass pitch.
With work to dig up the current pitch and replace it with an artificial 3G pitch due to start later this month, the football club are holding a ‘Leave Your Mark’ match this Friday evening, with money raised being split between the club and a local charity.
Supporters will have the chance to pay as little as £100 to play against some of the legends of Park Avenue’s past, including Donald ‘Jock’ Kane who scored 137 goals in 503 games between 1981 and 2001, and Kevin Morrison, scorer of 196 goals in 489 games for the club between 1984 and 2000.
Also already confirmed to play for the legends is Glyndwr ‘Paddy’ Hughes, stalwart Ken Williams who played a staggering 642 games between 1974 and 1991, Gavin Allen, scorer of 113 goals in 238 appearances at the club over a nine year period, and winger Nigel Nicholas who played 301 times for the club.
Although the official deadline has passed to be able to play against the legends on the night, the club say you could still be in with a chance if you enter a minimum bid of £100. The highest 20 bidders will be eligible to play, irrespective of ability.
Thomas Crockett, Aberystwyth Town FC marketing manager, said: “It is going to be a terrific send off for the legendary pitch, which has been played on by the likes of George Best for Northern Ireland under 15s, Steve McManaman, Ross Barkley, and John Toshack.
“The pitch has hosted Welsh Cup finals and international matches. The pitch has had a legendary history and we want to make sure it has a fitting send off, while also recognising these great stalwarts for the club.
“It is a massive achievement playing over 200 matches for the club and involves making big sacrifices, so we feel we have got to recognise the service these players and managers have given. And we have also tried to engage the supporters as well.”
Admission on the night will cost £2, and half of the gate receipts will be donated to Hospice at Home Aberystwyth Volunteers.
Bids should be made to Thomas Crockett by calling: 07717 470301.
