Madam,

The article last week headlined Upset over library move to day centre, has upset many in Criccieth who worked hard to save the library.

During the period of discussion on austerity the threat of complete closure loomed over our library. The public consultation meeting at Criccieth was attended by over 50 people, and town councillors and residents were at another at Porthmadog to meet with Hywel James, the county’s chief librarian.

One resident started a ‘Save the Library’ Facebook page which raised great interest and concern. The town council was urged to do everything it could to save the library.

As a result of this reaction, Gwynedd Council designated it as a community library, which meant that they would provide one librarian, the books and service, but the town would be responsible for the building and running costs.

As we could, in no way, afford to take over the present building and no other suitable locations are available, an arrangement has been made with Gwynedd Council to move the library to the under-utilised Encil y Coed day centre. There is adequate space.

As the alternative to this would be the complete loss of the library, the majority of residents support the move. There has been a long period of consultation and everyone has had the opportunity to have their say. This planned arrangement has been known for quite a while.

It is strange that Mici Plwm who, I believe, lives in Nefyn and is a member of Pwllheli Council, has taken a sudden interest in our community.

Yours etc, Cllr Robert Dafydd Cadwalader, Criccieth Town Council.
