Mountain road

WORK has been undertaken by Ceredigion County Council to repair and resurface a section of the mountain road between Llanfair and Llanddewi Brefi. The road condition was poor, with many pot holes. The section which has been repaired runs from near Pengelli’r bryn to half way be-tween Esgair Garn and Pant Glas.

Visit of Bishop

BISHOP Wyn Evans of St David’s diocese in the Church of Wales paid a visit to the parish to meet residents at an open event where refreshments were served. He also viewed the St Mary’s church, the rebuilding work taking place with the Teifi bridge and called at Llwyn to see the new dairy facilities. Thanks were given to Sally Leech and Paula Barker who had kindly provided the refreshments. As a memento of his visit he was presented with a copy of a local book on the history of the area entitled Struggle for Survival in the Cardiganshire Hills, which focuses on Llanfair and Llanddewi Brefi. During his visit he was accompanied by the Rev Bill Fillery, acting priest in charge of Llanfair and Cellan parishes. The visit concluded with evening prayers at All Saints Church in Cellan.

Women’s Institute

THE WI held its monthly meeting in April which focused on the activity of rag rug making which was led by visitor Eluned Davies. Members were encouraged to bring materials such as hessian, old tee shirts, with scissors, a cutting mat and prodding tool.

May Day weekend

OVER THE May Day weekend there were many hundreds of unexpected visitors to the village as people arrived to try to find and then attend a music “rave” in forestry land on Llanfair Mountain. The unapproved activity saw road congestion in some areas and noise from electronic music. A number of people have approached local councillors to ask what can be done to prevent a reoccurrence of such actions in the future.

History book

IN 2007 a book History of a Cardiganshire Parish: Llanfair Clydogau was published. There was a print run of 500 copies of the 220-page book and it quickly sold out. It has just been reprinted and is avail-able once more for purchase from Llanfair Shop.

100th birthday

ONE OF the best known local residents, Rowena Evans, has just celebrated her 100th birthday. She was born in Llanfair in 1916 and as a little girl attended the village’s party to give thanks for the ending of the First World War. In recent years, she has lived in Cellan and is currently a resident in Hafen Deg. On the day after her birthday she received a surprise visitor in that Bishop Wyn Evans of St David’s diocese called to see her.

Bridge repair

WORKERS from the county council are continuing the rebuilding work of the Teifi bridge. It has been undertaken for nine weeks so far. In the meantime the bridge is closed to vehicles, but pedestrians can cross.
