A LLYN village has made it through to the semi-finals of Channel 4’s ‘Village of the Year Award’ and is one step closer to winning the £10,000 prize money.

In the first episode of the series, which pits four villages against each other, Penelope Keith and a panel of judges looked at Charmouth, Lyford, Redbrook and Aberdaron, who managed to beat their competition.

The judges were looking for a combination of scenery, architecture and eccentricity. They compete in the semi finals this Saturday evening at 8pm.

The town had several features that helped it come out on top in the judge’s eyes, one of which was Bardsey Island, historically used for pilgrimages and still holds the remains of a 13th century Abbey.

Its varied landscape of sandy beaches and rolling hills create wide appeal to many kinds of hobbyists, including surfers, cyclists and birdwatchers.

Its Bronze Age inspired roundhouse was also praised.

The traditional reed-roofed hut is used as an events and educational facility by the Felin Uchaf group, who encourage young people to be creative and explore nature.

It’s rural and aesthetic charm will be put to the test when they are judged in the semi finals, and possibly the final round. Should they win the £10,000, it will be allocated to a certified local agency.

The team behind the show, Reef Television, will re-visit the winning town to see how the money is being put to the towns benefit.
