A DETERMINED organisation has come forward with a plan to save an historic Porthmadog landmark.

Last week the Cambrian News reported the concerns of John Barry Mcdonald who was hoping to save the old Cob plaque on the Old Tollhouse, an “immensely important” Porthmadog icon.

The Tollhouse, built in the early stages of the 19th century, is one of first buildings that visitors to Porthmadog will see and it is feared that a dilapidated building may reflect poorly on the tour.

Following the publication of Mr Mcdonald’s concerns, an new initiative, ‘The Cob Tollhouse Project’, have been in touch with the newspaper to assure the worried resident that wheels were in motion to save the iconic attraction.

Ian Dunsire, project manager of the Tollhouse Project explained: “Mr McDonald needs to know that he is not alone in having concerns and that a group of like-minded individuals formed towards the end of 2015 with the aim of not just saving the plaque but of turning the tollhouse itself from an eyesore into a visitor centre portraying Porthmadog local history.

"We have sourced local funding and have a Heritage Lottery Application lined up but we have been waiting for over a year now for the Welsh Assembly Government to transfer the ownership to Gwynedd so that the project can progress."
