AN ARTICULATED lorry blocked the narrow streets of Dolgellau for over an hour on Friday.
The XPO vehicle was wedged between the Stag Inn and the town’s magistrates’ court at lunchtime before a combined effort from the driver, town locals and police managed to free up the lorry.
It is not uncommon for lorries to get snagged up in the narrow, winding streets, with HGVs getting “trapped”, approximately twice a year.
Likewise, the heritage buildings in Dolgellau are frequently damaged by large vehicles attempting to pass through.
Dolgellau town councillor Jo Checkley believes it is time for action.
“I’ve spoken to numerous people about this problem in the past and we all agree there should be signs outside the town warning drivers of large vehicles that our roads aren’t suitable for them to drive through.
“There are ways and means to deliver to the town, but HGVs physically can’t get through our one-way system, they’re just too big.
“Hopefully installing those signs would stop this from occurring quite so often.”
Cllr Checkley witnessed the event on Friday on returning to the town after a memorial service.
“I did see this particular lorry after I returned from attending the 50th anniversary of the Penmaenpool tragedy,” she added.
“It was great to see the town come together as it so often does to help resolve the matter.
“We had people diverting traffic around the town and others helping the truck driver manoeuvre out of a very tight squeeze. I don’t think any damage was done this time.”
A Gwynedd Council spokesperson said: “The council will be investigating this matter further and give consideration to any viable solutions which would improve the situation.”
