The popular Machynlleth Lantern Procession is to return this year, with a new committee organising the event.

The October spectacle will now be known as the ‘Bro Ddyfi Lantern Procession’, with a new generation of local volunteers working together so it can continue to light up the Dyfi Valley for the years to come.

In 2026 the Lantern Procession will take place in Machynlleth on Saturday 31 October, with workshops taking place across the Dyfi Valley throughout October, including half term.

For over 25 years the Lantern Procession, led by different groups of volunteers, has brought thousands of people together each Autumn, transforming the streets of Machynlleth and Dyfi Villages into a magical celebration of creativity, community and light.

The lanterns have become an important part of the cultural life of the Dyfi Valley, inspiring generations of children, families, artists, volunteers to create spectacular handmade lanterns bringing local stories to life.

The new organising volunteer team will be delivering this year's procession, but also looking to its future, exploring new local stories to tell, creating opportunities for local people to develop skills in event management, lantern making, marketing and outdoor arts, as well as developing an event set up that can ensure its future.

George Horne, spokesperson for the organising volunteer team said: “The Lantern Procession belongs to the whole community and we want it to remain that way.

“It has created countless memories for people across the Dyfi Valley over the decades.

“One of my first memories when I was 4 or 5 years old, seeing a massive dragon floating across the Plas grounds, it felt truly magical.

“We're incredibly excited to be taking this forward, but we know that creating a sustainable future will only be possible if it's something we build together.”
