Civic Society

THE BI-MONTHLY meeting of the society’s executive committee was held at the Tabernacle on Thursday, 19 November.Chairperson Margaret Vince opened the meeting and told members how pleased she was to see such a good attendance and then took members through the minutes of 18 September.Arising from the last set of minutes, secretary Rab Jones reported an excellent turnout at the public drop-in/exhibition to view details of the proposed development to provide a new Dyfi Bridge to the north of Machynlleth. He also reported on fly-tipping on the grounds of Plas Machynlleth which has increased since the closure of the Machynlleth Household Waste Recycling Centre operated by Potters. The matter was being addressed by the town council.Fly-tipping and wild growth on the former Travis Perkins site on Doll Street was also a problem. Powys County Council had contacted the site’s owners regarding the issue, which resulted in the removal of the fly-tipped rubbish. However, the wild growth continued to cause the site to be an eyesore. It was noted that no decision had, as yet, been made by Powys planners regarding the new access in the wall at Canolfan Owain Glyndwr nor for change of use for the former Machynlleth Junior School.Executive committee member Bill Halls and the secretary had represented the society at a meeting of civic societies at Llandinam. The meeting, called by Civic Trust Wales to consider the societies’ future roles, made a major plea to attract younger people to join their ranks. The secretary indicated that he’d had a number of boxes of papers from the estate of the late David Wyn Davies and that he would need some time to catalogue all of the items. The treasurer, John Wynne Jones, presented the society’s accounts, which were approved with members’ appreciation. He continued by presenting a leaflet that he had prepared to provide information on the past and more recent history of the town’s Royal House. He was warmly thanked by the chair and members for his excellent work. The next meeting will be held at the Tabernacle on Thursday, 21 January, at 7pm.
