MACHYNLLETH Rotary Club in conjunction with the clubs of Newtown and Llanidloes held their annual Across Wales Walk on Saturday, 18 June, with great success. Around 130 walkers of all ages - joined by a further 25 walkers along the route - completed their journey to England in fine weather and good time, and in so doing raised around £25,000 in total for their own chosen charities. Proceeds from the walk enable the joint Rotary clubs to make their own donation, this year to The Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospital for Wales. President Roger Seagrave extended his sincere thanks to fellow Rotarians and the many supporters from Machynlleth who made the day possible.

Hear to Help

THE next Hear to Help drop-in clinic in Machynlleth is this Friday, 1 July, at the Care Centre, Forge Road, from 10am to midday. NHS hearing-aid wearers can visit this Action on Hearing Loss Cymru service for friendly help with cleaning their aids, new tubes and free batteries. The clinic is run by trained volunteers on the first Friday of each month.

Open day

VOLUNTEERS and members of Gerddi Bro Ddyfi gardens have been extremely busy over recent days preparing for the open day on Saturday, 2 July. Starting at 1pm at the group’s Plas grounds-based gardens, this free event for all the family will have the lovely gardens to enjoy plus lots more to do such as flower art, a bug safari and a plant stall.Tea and cake will also be available. Bowls

LLYNLLOEDD bowlers emphasised their Montgomeryshire CBA County Competitions’ intentions as they made steady progress through the rounds.Into the open singles quarterfi-nals went Andrew Fleming, Barry Fleming and Nigel Fleming while, teaming up for the open pairs, Nigel and Andrew made progress to the semi-finals.Meanwhile Deacon Price, Don Lewis and Garry Price moved smartly into the semi-finals of the open triples.In the open fours, Mark Gaskell, Garry Price, Jonathan Taylor and Andrew Fleming also booked a semi-final place, while Nigel Flem-ing, Mark Rowlands, Barry Fleming and David Rowlands awaited their quarter-final tie.Making progress in the county seniors’ competitions, Barry Flem-ing and David Rowlands look forward to their quarter-final match, and already through to the fours’ semi-finals are Don Lewis, Kevin Jones, Barry Fleming and David Rowlands.Machynlleth, multiple past win-ners of the Cambrian Rose Bowl, earned a trip to Lampeter after a first-round victory over Aberaeron in this season’s competition.Returning to the Montgomeryshire CBA County League, first division newcomers Carno gave visitors Machynlleth a tough time on June 24. Machynlleth emerged winners by ten shots, gaining six points to Carno’s one.However, suffering their fourth straight defeat in the second divi-sion, Maglona (one point) lost by 50 shots at home to the division’s leaders, Aberdyfi (six points).

Pool

YET to lose in this season’s Machynlleth and District Summer Pool League, leaders Llew Coch produced yet another winning performance to defeat Slaters by ten frames to five at home, during week five on 16 June.Home victories also went the way of Dwynant, comprehensive 13-2 winners over Llew Coch Ladies, and Skinners A’s 12-3 victory against Rugby Club.Table (week five): Llew Coch (15), Dwynant (12), Skinners A (9), Skinners B (6), Rugby Club (6), Llanbrynmair (3), Slaters (3), Llew Coch Ladies (0), Bowling Club (0).

Golf club

TWO players from the Ladies’ Section played in the second round of the Challenge Bowls held at Aberdyfi on 2 June: Rhian Wynn in the Silver Division and Sue Fishbourne in the Bronze. Both qualified to play in the All Wales Final at Llandrindod in August. Congratulations were given to both, and they were wished best of luck in the final.On 9 June the lady members played the Colonel Wilder trophy. Margaret Austin won with 33 points; Sue Fishbourne was second and Rhian Wynn third.

Mach Fusiliers

THE meeting of the Royal Welch Fusiliers Comrades Association Machynlleth, Tywyn and Dolgellau was presided over by Major Ifan Price-Edwards and his assistant Cpl Gwyn Roberts 50. Two new members were welcomed, Richard Jones RN hailing from Rhayader and from an old RWF family and Marc Cartwright ex 1RWF from Cemaes. Member-ship was now up to 30.An update on Mach Army Cadet Force was given by C/Sgt Geraint Rowlands, who announced that they were now up to 16 boys and girls and thus had made their target to prevent the unit from closing down. Boots were the only issue, but will hopefully be addressed.All but two former members had paid up their subs of £10.A combined VE/VJ Day was confirmed for Friday, 29 July, in the Clwb Bowlio, 2pm at the Cenotaph with food available from 3pm.Help with an awning for The RBL Mach Carnival Float (23 July) was confirmed and paid for.Presentation of a RWF plaque to the bowling club was confirmed.Howard Wyn Davies was congrat-ulated for having the RWF Standard adorned with the branch titles.Details of a fun day at Capel Bangor, Aber Golf club on Sunday, 21 August were discussed at £5 a head and £50 was allocated for raf-fle prizes.Bruce McKay showed a number of fantastic oil paintings which he had painted from memory of his active service in the Second World War.The next meeting will be on Thursday, 7 July. They meet every first Thursday of the month at 7pm in Mach Bowling Club (behind the Co-op). Edible Mach Maethlon

IT WAS all hands to the plough as Edible Mach Maethlon volunteers took part in finishing touches to the group’s superb show allotment at Plas Machynlleth on Wednesday, 22 June.The session included the planting of fruit bushes, the erection of fencing panels and the spreading of bark chippings.The end product was a big credit to all involved on such a lovely evening.

Battle of Somme Remembrance

A REMEMBRANCE service has been held at St Peter’s Parish Church, Machynlleth, to commemorate 100 years since the Battle of the Somme (1916-2016), and to remember the heroes who fought and died in the First World War’s bloodiest battle. The service was conducted by Canon Rev Martin Riley and Canon Rev Kathleen Rogers (pictured). Ninety-year-old ex-Fusilier, Bruce McCay and Stephen Doyle, chairman of the Machynlleth Branch of the Royal British Legion, are also pictured laying wreaths at the town’s war memorial.
