MACHYNLLETH, seeking their first Montgomeryshire CBA County League Division One title in the last four years, needed just half a point from their last match of the season to leapfrog Welshpool to take the honours.Determined visitors Llanidloes gave the title-seekers a big fright before the relieved home bowlers won on two rinks to secure two points although, also capturing two rink points, a delighted Llanidloes achieved an overall 11-shot victory and five points. Whilst full marks to a rejuvenated Llanidloes on an excellent result, it was Machynlleth who secured the impres-sive county shield and became champions for the 30th time since 1959.Machynlleth ladies boosted their standing in the Montgomeryshire Wednesday Ladies League thanks to a series of excellent results.They climbed to fourth place with wins over Montgomery (26-12), Welsh-pool (16-15), Wynnstay (22-12) and a 15-15 draw with Hafren.

Concert for the Heart

AMONG those appearing at the Tabernacle’s upcoming ‘Concert for the Heart’ will be Côr Ger y Lli, Thomas Mathias and Linda Griffiths, and Bois y Fru. The concert will be held on 24 September.

MACHYNLLETH’S two North Wales Pool Association Inter League county teams’ prospects of promotion from divisions one and three were given a big boost as both teams gained important wins on Sunday, 7 August.Machynlleth A won their first division game at Chester by 21 frames to 19 while, and with an identical score, Machynlleth B sealed victory at home to third division second-placed Welshpool B.

U3A

MEMBERS of the U3A thoroughly enjoyed a most interesting talk at their recent meeting given by David Anning, currently site manager at the RSPB’s Ynyshir Reserve in Ceredigion. David’s topic was ‘Reptiles and Am-phibians of North Wales’.The next meeting of the group will be held on Friday, 16 September at the Bowling Club, commencing at 2pm, when the speaker will be Hilary Jones from U3A’s Welsh head office.

AS guest speakers go, it certainly looks as if Pennal Tuesday Club’s next invitees will be somewhat different. Jane Hoy and Helen Sandler will be looking to act their presentation to an accompanying video.
