Police negotiators spent two days trying to convince a man to climb down from a 70ft telephone mast on the outskirts of Dolgellau this week.

The man, believed to be local, climbed up the mast on the outskirts of Dolgellau, at around 8am on Monday morning, with two bed sheets covered in writing raising awareness of ‘mental illness’ and ‘abuse’.

Negotiators from North Wales Police arrived on the scene shortly afterwards to try to persuade the man to come down and ‘road closed’ signs were placed around the area.

It is believed he slept at the top of the mast on Monday night, creating a makeshift tent for himself, before finally climbing down at around 4.20pm on Tuesday.

People in Dolgellau have reported a loss of mobile phone signal across the area as a result of the protest.

A spokesperson for North Wales Police said on Tuesday: “An incident in which a man climbed a telephone mast near Dolgellau has concluded safely this afternoon.

“He came down following discussions with trained police negotiators and has been arrested for public nuisance, criminal damage and other offences.”
