Madam,
Your readers may be interested in the feedback to me on your letter about the future of Llanbedr, Pensarn, Llandanwg, Shell Island and their lovely lagoon.
All felt that the government plan for “Managed Retreat” under the Haskoning document was ridiculous. It would leave the entire dune including the sixth century Llandanwg church to be destroyed.
Some of the suggestions were:
• to raise the existing blockage to the sea at Llandanwg car park by four feet so that the dunes and church are saved
• adopt a philosophy of converting the problem – global warming– into an opportunity; to create something new, modern and exciting as has happened in Cardiff. There the creation of the Bae has resulted in one of the finest capital cities in the world
• develop the entrance to the lagoon by adding a tidal lock, as in Caernarfon and Felinheli. At the entrance develop as well a tide controlling barrier which rises once the water level in the lagoon reaches the current high tide springs and controls it at that level.
This will mean that the wonderful existing lagoon, marsh land, saltings, sand and mud will last. So will all the surrounding three parishes and the seven houses which are currently condemned. And Shell Island.
The A496 and the railway too will remain as they are now. Not to mention the 34 species of local birds and the massive numbers of migrant birds which drop in, feed and chat on the saltings. Plus the otter and salmon.
We should explore the possibility that tidal energy might be derived from the water flow, since the necessary gadgetry is now getting much cheaper.
Yours etc,
Graham P Tottle, Thrumble Coombe, Maes Artro, Llanbedr.
