With reference to the continuing correspondence about traffic and speed limits, I should like to point out that many people will welcome the Senedd’s plan to introduce default speed limits of 20mph in residential areas in 2023.
Speeds greater than 20mph are impractical on many residential roads in any case. Reducing speed limits makes roads much safer for all users. At lower speeds, there are fewer collisions, and those that do occur cause less damage to vehicles and significantly less injury and death, particularly to pedestrians and cyclists.
Safer roads mean that more people feel happy to walk and cycle to get around their communities, which improves our health and our environment.
In Talybont we are plagued by speeding vehicles, and I am sure that reducing the speed limits on the A487 through the village will make this a less dangerous, more pleasant and more sociable place to live. It will particularly improve the lives of our elderly residents and our children, and make us all safer. Adding a minute or two to journey times is a very small price to pay for that.
