A Tywyn man who suffers from a rare condition is planning on running 10k to raise money and awareness.
Mark Edwards has a rare condition called Pku (phenylketonuria)which means he cannot break down phenylalanine into tyrosine. Too much of a build-up would then in turn cause other conditions and eventually, if untreated after a long time, irreversible brain damage.
Mark said: “There is a drug available, which has been approved for all countries in Europe called kuvan, which the UK government won’t approve. Currently I’m allowed 6 grams of protein a day. Put into context, one small pack of wotsits is 1g of protein. If kuvan was approved here and I was responsive it would mean my protein intake could be increased.”
Mark is currently training to take part in the Great Manchester Run next month to raise money for a charity set up for those with Pku.
Mark added: “The nspku receive no government funding, so rely totally on the generosity of donations.”
The Great Manchester Run 10k takes place on 19 May.
