A new world record has been set at Llanbedr Airfield.
Snowdonia Aerospace Centre is now recognised as the new home of British Radio Control Speed Racing.
Having already secured the overall world record in 2016 at the airfield with Tony Lovering’s hybrid rocket car, The Black Knight, at 210.11mph, the Electric Open Wheel World record was also broken at the airfield in October last year by Martin Peace.
The Electric Open Wheel record had until then been held by Kef Tetha of Australia at 145.69mph. The Open Wheel class is a six cell (22.2 volt) open wheel, eighth scale buggy.
During ROSSA latest visit to the airfield, Martin Peace was a man on a mission to beat the previous world record using his car, a Hobao, Hyper VSe.
Martin’s previous highest speed was 141mph, so the record seemed to be within reach. He had slowly been refining and winding up the car over a period of about two years.
On the first day at the airfield the weather was good with a slight head wind and Martin, on his seventh pass, reached 143mph.
On the second day, the airfield the weather was even better and after a few minor adjustments Martin, on his second pass, smashed the world record at 147.26mph. Martin, still not content with this, pushed the limits further and on his fourth pass hit 147.9mph but on his fifth pass secured an even faster and now current world record for this class of 151.18mph.
