Madam,

Responding to Theresa May’s speech in Chatham House, despite her desperate scrabbling, the outgoing Prime Minister could not hide the fact that she leaves behind a legacy of failure.

A failure to tackle the burning injustices she first spoke about on the steps of Downing Street and a failure to navigate the UK through the biggest political crisis in decades.

We hear the same lines and excuses from a Prime Minister who managed to speak so much but say – and do – so little.

In reality, her premiership can be reduced down to a few soundbites, perhaps none more dangerous than ‘no deal is better than a bad deal’ – legitimising one of the most damaging policies in the history of the British state.

In the end she was bought down by her own backbenchers and as we work across political lines to stop an increasingly extreme Conservative party, the next Prime Minister should be ready to face equally tough opposition.

Yours etc, Liz Saville Roberts MP.
