A FORMER Penglais School pupil has raised almost £400 for a homeless charity after spending a night on the streets of Cardiff.

Melanie Owen, 21, was taking part in the Cardiff Sleep Out on 10 November to raise money for the Llamau charity, which helps young homeless people living on Wales’ streets.

And Melanie, the youngest person to take part in the sleep out, told the Cambrian News this week that she was “delighted” to have “smashed” her target of raising £250.

“I had two main objectives when signing up for the sleep out — firstly to raise awareness for homeless in Wales, and secondly to raise money to give homeless people a chance to start again afresh,” said Melanie, who studies law and French at Cardiff University.

“I am delighted that I smashed my target of £250 and raised a total of £377.”

But Melanie, whose friend Katie also participated in the sleep out, said she also came away from the experience with a greater appreciation for the struggles of homeless people, and an even greater sense of perspective.
