Dave Haskell’s references to smart meters and disconnection in his recent letter are incorrect.

There are strict consumer protections in place to ensure that consumers’ lights can always remain on – these are unchanged by smart meters.

Smart meters eliminate the uncertainty that comes from estimated bills, meaning that you can be confident that you will only be billed for what you are actually using. Smart meters are the crucial foundation of a smart energy grid for the nation. They will mean consumers are empowered to eliminate energy waste at home, accurate energy bills and a cleaner energy network that can cope with future demands such as the mass uptake in electric vehicles.

Smart meters are a win for consumers, the environment and the economy.
