A LYNX which is still on the loose in the Aberystwyth area more than a week after it escaped from Borth’s Wild Animal Kingdom is believed to have killed seven sheep.

The National Sheep Association says the sheep died from a single bite to the neck and two sheep were partially eaten.

It says the attacks should serve as warning about any plans to reintroduce lynx into the wild.

Despite a widespread search by police and zoo workers Lillith is still on the prowl.

Dyfed-Powys Police has said the lynx could become aggressive if it is cornered and is urging the public to be vigilant.

Walkers have been asked to avoid using a public footpath in the area.

There has been criticism of the zoo from animal protection group PETA and the Lynx UK Trust, which is hoping to reintroduce the creatures into the wild.

They have called for Lillith to be removed from the zoo when she is finally captured.

In a joint statement they said: “Lillith had reportedly been gone for several days before the zoo even realised she was missing, and she and a number of other lynxes were confined to a small enclosure in which territorial aggression was commonplace.

“We call on Ceredigion County Council to ensure that Lillith, if caught, is moved to a sanctuary where she can lead the more meaningful life she has thus far been denied. We stand ready to help.

“Lynxes, like all animals - humans included - want to be free. Even the best zoos cannot begin to replicate their natural habitats or give them the autonomy to make choices about relationships - or anything else, for that matter.

“They are invariably stressed when deprived of all control over their lives and will do whatever they can to escape.”
