CALLS have been made for the Welsh Government to do more to tackle safety issues on one of the main routes into and out of Aberystwyth.
Ceredigion AM Elin Jones has told the government’s transport minister Ken Skates AM that “more attention to safety” is needed on the A44 between Aberystwyth and Llangurig - labelled one of the most dangerous roads in the UK.
The scene of several fatal incidents in recent years, Ms Jones has asked for “specific details” of what the Welsh Government plans to implement on the “vital and unavoidable” mid Wales route.
A previous review of safety on the long stretch of road two years ago resulted in signs and variable speed limits being put in place in Capel Bangor near the village school and crossing points.
But Ms Jones said that more attention to safety is needed along “much more” of the A44.
“The A44 is a vital route for Ceredigion residents and businesses all year round, and provides a vital part of the infrastructure of mid Wales,” she said.
“It’s time this road became a priority for Welsh Government..”
The Welsh Government said “a number of road safety improvements schemes have been implemented at locations with poor collision history along the A44 since 2011” and that the government is “committed to improving road safety and reducing the number of people killed and seriously injured on Welsh roads.”
