A GRANDMOTHER and granddaughter from Morfa Nefyn are cutting their hair for the first time since before lockdown to support two charities.
Astri Rooke and her granddaughter Ally Rooke Dennis have raised money for MIND and will donate their hair to the Little Princess Trust. The big cut takes place on Saturday, 24 April.
Astri said: “There are lots of people who have had a problem with their mental health during the last year.
“With having gone a year without a haircut, my hair had grown out a lot.
“Rather than cut a little bit off, we decided to cut it all off. It has been nice to be able to do it with my granddaughter.
“Lots of people have given us support. We set a target of £500 and we have nearly reached it.”
This is the first time the two have cut their hair for charity but one member of their family Arnie Dennis, Ally’s mother and Astri’s daughter, has previously done so twice.
Ally, who graduated during the pandemic and works in the NHS, said: “The last year has been more bizarre than I think anyone in my generation could ever have expected. My hair had become so long, I thought I might as well grow it out and donate to a good cause.
“A lot of my friends at work have struggled with their mental health, I still think it’s quite a taboo subject.
“MIND have helped a few people I know in the last year. This is why we wanted to donate to them.
“A lot of people’s mental health has been affected in some way in the last year, whether that is through living alone, losing someone to the pandemic or losing their job.
“The support has been great. I’ve had friends in China and Norway who have donated. It shows that this is not just a UK problem.”
