Madam,
May I respectfully bring some clarity to the rumbling of the buses in Eldon Square.
On occasion up to six buses including double deckers attempt to stop in the square. This obscures the route for motorists, endangers pedestrians and causes large amounts of diesel exhaust to be trapped in the enclosed space.
Adjacent shops are subjected to the aforementioned fumes and owing to the lack of purpose-made waiting areas potential passengers sit on the window sills of these shops, thus obscuring their wares and inhibiting access.
Potential passengers cannot see which bus is the appropriate one to embark owing to the haphazard manner in which the drivers are forced to park.
Drivers sometimes have to do an extra full circuit of the town in order to access a parking position.
Passengers embarking or disembarking have to weave between the high sides of the rows of parked buses and are not easily visible to the drivers.
One passerby was recently pushed over by a bus backing up a little just to let another driver out of the melee. This was reported by yourselves, and witnessed by myself.
The buses detract visually from a very fine looking stone square which is of some architectural significance and greatly appreciated by visitors.
The Marian car park offers a large space in which to make a suitable shelter, seating parking and turning position. A slight modification would be required to the pavement for buses turning left onto Bont Fawr. This should have been incorporated into the recent flood defence works, had forethought been applied. Public toilets exist on this site.
The theory that moving the facility from the square would disadvantage the infirm or elderly is not valid because it would depend on from which direction they had walked.
On arrival at the new facility they would enjoy covered seating, also the layout would help prevent passengers being injured by moving buses.
These improvements I believe would be of great benefit to elderly, infirm, young and any other category of passenger.
A one bay “stop on request” facility could be provided in Eldon Square in addition to the proposed new facility.
Buses waiting and transfering are then comfortably accommodated. Gwynedd Council would have to give up some parking spaces but this would not constitute a problem because their aim must be to benefit the town.
I look forward to using my new bus pass at the proposed facility.
Yours etc,
Max Ellis, Carreg Feurig, Dolgellau.
