Madam,

In response to the letter titled ‘Cut number of MPs to allow extra money to save toilets’, I have some good news to relay to her. The number of MPs is going down!

However, thanks to the snap general election called for 8 June, it will not happen until 2022 at the earliest.

Since the middle of 2016, the Boundary Commissions for England, Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland have been telling the people of the UK: “We have been told by Parliament to reduce the number of seats in the Commons from 650 to 600 and we would like your help”.

This process is currently ongoing and was going to report towards the latter part of this year with a view to Parliament voting next year to confirm the boundaries for the 2020 general election.

However, following the calling of the General Election for 8 June, when Parliament votes next year those new seats will not come in until the next election (2022 at the earliest) and may even have to be reviewed again as the law calls for a new review to start in 2021.

So my advice to Jill would be this: When the Boundary Commission for Wales publishes its next set of recommendations for whatever replaces Dwyfor, write to them, offer your thoughts on what the new seat should look like and allow your voice to be held.

P.S. The Local Government Boundary Commission is currently reviewing the number of councillors and seats that make up Gwynedd Council as well.

Yours etc,

Harry Hayfield, Llanon.
