Tributes have been paid to well-known journalist, author and editor Ioan Roberts from Pen Llyn who has died aged 78.

Mr Roberts, a member of Plaid Cymru Gwynedd, has been described by the party as an “inspiration”, following his death on Monday, 30 December.

Paying tribute to Mr Roberts, who was originally from Rhoshirwaun before moving to Pwllheli, MP for Dwyfor Meirionnydd Liz Saville Roberts said: “It is a sad duty to publish news of the death of Ioan Roberts, or Io Mo. A nationalist and journalist who was an active friend of the cause of the Welsh nation. All condolences to Alwena and the family.”

Plaid Cymru Gwynedd lost another member, Dafydd Wyn Jones, and gave a joint statement on the passing of both men.

They said: “It is with great sadness that we lose friends, two of Plaid Cymru key members in Gwynedd, Dafydd Wyn Jones, Blaenau Ffestiniog and Ioan Roberts, Pwllheli.

Plaid Cymru Gwynedd councillors extend our deepest sympathy to their families in their loss.

“Thank you for your guidance, inspiration, endurance and loyalty over the years - our lives will be poorer without you, but we are grateful for knowing both Dafydd and Ioan and even more grateful for your friendship over the years.”
