AN Aberystwyth woman will scale three Welsh mountains in under 24 hours in memory of her father who died 20 years ago after struggling with alcoholism.

Mother-of-two Rebecca Rock will be joined by her husband Mark when she takes on the highest peaks in south, mid and north Wales in June, trekking up Pen y Fan in the Brecon Beacons, and Cadair Idris and Snowdon in the Snowdonia National Park in one day.

Rebecca, 42, is hoping to raise as much money as possible for The National Association for Children of Alcoholics, a charity which is close to her heart after losing her own father to alcoholism when she was 21 years old.

“He had a long addiction to alcohol and sadly his addiction took his life,” said Rebecca, who lives in Blaenplwyf with Mark, 46, their two daughters Phoebe, 10, and Holly, 8, and their pet ‘cockerpoo’ — a cross between a cocker spaniel and a poodle — puppy Marley.

“After watching a Louis Theroux documentary about alcoholism last year I was really touched by the struggle of a young man named Joe Walker.

“I started thinking how I wanted to do something positive to remember my dad and also to help other people fighting addiction and to support their families.”

Rebecca said she was aware that her dad, Tony, was drinking a lot, even at a young age.

“Every evening we’d reach the shop and he would buy me a bottle of pop and himself a bottle of gin,” she said.
