A mum of two will return to Aberystwyth later this month for a charity walk to raise money for a cancer charity after her five-year-old son was diagnosed with the disease last year.
Carly Cooke, 34, who lived and worked in Aberystwyth for many years, will take on the challenge of walking the 18 miles of the Ceredigion coastal path with friends and family to raise money for the charity Children with Cancer UK.
Her five-year-old son, Harri, was diagnosed with a rare cancer in January 2018 after a CT scan revealed a large tumour inside his sinus cavity.
Carly, who was a student at Aberystwyth University between 2003 and 2008 before going on to work at the Welsh Government building and the Cambrian Mountains Initiative, said her son’s cancer was “quite rare”.
“Ewing’s Sarcoma is a type of bone cancer and therefore the chemo drugs he had to have were very old and harsh,” said Carly, who met her now husband in Aberystwyth before leaving to travel in 2013 then settling near her family in Gloucestershire to bring up Harri.
“Harri is now in remission after a gruelling nine months of chemotherapy treatment."
She added: “The big coastal walk will take place on Saturday, 31 August, beginning in Aberystwyth and finishing in Aberaeron, with a stop for lunch and a rest halfway.
“We want as many people to join us as possible, everyone is welcome.
“We are also looking for volunteers along the way to help out.
