A STOUT-HEARTED stylist is taking on one of Wales’ most taxing endurance challenges to raise money for a children’s hospital.
Hairdresser Karen Rees-Roberts, 45, will take on the epic 50-mile Pen Llyn Ultra, an endurance feat which requires participants to complete the rugged loop across the Llyn Peninsula in under 24 hours.
Karen is raising money for Alder Hey Hospital in Liverpool, where her 12-year-old daughter Kerys, who was diagnosed with Scoliosis in January of this year, is currently being treated.
Scoliosis is a condition where the spine twists and curves to the side which can lead to terrible back pain.
Kerys, a Year 8 student at Ysgol Glan y Mor, Pwllheli, is currently wearing a spinal brace 20 hours a day until she is fully grown in the hope to avoid surgery.
Karen, who has already completed London Moonwalk and a midnight trek up Snowdon for other charitable causes, was determined to thank the hospital for their support with a display of physical endurance.
“This will be by far my biggest challenge,” said Karen, who co-owns hairdressers Kar a Lyns in Pwllheli.
“Taking part in this ultra marathon took my fancy because it’s local and you get to see the stunning scenery that is all around us.
“My friend Huw Williams is the organiser. He has taken on many challenges like this and is a big inspiration.”
