A new Roll of Honour for Borth to commemorate the sacrifice of armed forces personnel from the village has been unveiled.

The new Roll of Honour was dedicated by Rev David Williams on Tuesday, 24 September and replaced a former Roll of Honour which Cllr Ray Quant said had some errors on.

Cllr Quant said the new Roll of Honour was funded thanks to the sale of booklets drawn up as part of the commemoration of the First World War.

He said: “When the new Memorial Hall was opened in 1999 I had an engraved Roll of Honour 1914 to 1918, 1939 and 1945 plaque made for the hall.

“It was based on a Roll of Honour register passed to me.

“In the past 10 years I have been advised that some names are missing and other names incorrectly shown against their armed service.

“Replacing a large inscribed plaque each time an issue is raised is not straight forward due to the expense involved.

“Like many communities, Borth marked the 100th anniversary of the first World War when a WWI Commemoration Committee was established under the chairmanship of Cllr Carol Bainbridge, who over the four years issued a monthly summary sheet and at the end of the four years it was compiled into a booklet and sold at £5 each and the sales generated the funds for a new Roll of Honour at a cost of £795.

“To try and avoid the past problem of new names coming forward, a small team of researchers, namely Rev David Williams, Sue Dalton, Terrance Davies and myself, trawled through past records and newspapers for both wars, which has resulted in four new names and other minor changes."
