First of all can I say how wonderful it is to have Patrick O’Brien back with his thought-provoking column. I agree with every word he wrote last week.
I am writing though to say that the lockdown has been a very positive experience in large parts thanks to living in beautiful Ceredigion. I love seeing all the cyclists on our small lane, from tiny tots and teenagers to older couples and speed cyclists. They can all enjoy the lanes in Ceredigion now that there are so few cars on them.
The Welsh Government is looking to change our transport system post lockdown. Deputy transport minister Lee Waters has asked councils for proposals to make transport more sustainable. Cities around the country have put in temporary cycle lanes. Here in rural Ceredigion there is a lot that can be done to make cycling safer on a more permanent basis.
Strict speed limits can be imposed and rural pavements could become joined cycle lanes, with the proviso that cyclists dismount on meeting a pedestrian and at all times cycle at a safe speed. Those cyclists who feel secure on the roads can still speed along off the pavements.
There must be people out there with other ideas.
Post lockdown, residents in Ceredigion should be able to feel safe on the roads whilst on their bicycles. The ‘new normal’ ought to be better than the ‘old’.
