A PEDESTRIAN crossing in Penparcau could mean lorries having to travel through Aberystwyth town centre, two council candidates have claimed.

The warning came in a joint statement from Cllr Steve Davies and Dylan Lewis, both Plaid Cymru candidates for Penparcau in May’s county council elections, after calls for a pedestrian crossing at Southgate from the other member for Penparcau, Cllr Lorrae Jones-Southgate, and Mark Williams MP.

The Cambrian News previously reported that the Welsh Government is to review a previous decision not to provide a pedestrian crossing at the “extremely dangerous” spot, where elderly people and children cross the road between Neuadd Goffa and St Anne’s Church.

Mr Lewis and Cllr Davies said in a statement: “Unlike Cllr Lorrae Jones-Southgate, we both live in Penparcau and experience local traffic issues constantly on a daily basis within our community.

“We also take seriously the advice of road haulage operators such as Mansel Davies & Son, who have informed us of their concerns with regard to the possibility of heavy goods vehicles not being able to safely climb Penybont Hill due to traffic tailing back onto the top of the hill if a road crossing is reintroduced.

“They are concerned to the extent that they would have no choice but to re-direct their HGVs through Aberystwyth town centre, Trefechan and Penparcau village as a consequence.”

Cllr Lorrae Jones-Southgate said: “I wish well all candidates in the forthcoming council elections of 4 May, and remind them that there is no place for any such personal or derogatory comments.

“As a close community, we must work together for the good of others and ensure that our village prospers and develops.”
