BOW Street is to get a new £7m train station following a funding announcement by the UK government.

The Department for Transport has given the green light for the station, which it says will provide long term benefits to passengers and the wider economy.

The government will invest a total of £3.945m towards the project cost of £6.76m under the New Stations Fund, which gives the local community improved rail services.

The announcement comes after years of campaigning and discussions between the Welsh Government, the Mid Wales Rail Implementation Group, Ceredigion County Council, and the rail industry.

The original Bow Street railway station closed as a result of the Beeching cuts in the 1960s, and the new station will be located a short distance south of the original location, which is now the site of the Huws Gray builders’ merchants.

The station is to include a ‘public transport interchange’, featuring a park-and-ride facility for 100 cars, a layover area for buses and coaches, and a bicycle parking amenity.

Rail Minister Paul Maynard said: “We are committed to improving journeys for passengers right across the country. This means delivering more trains, quicker journeys and making more seats available.

“The new station at Bow Street is a great example of how our record investment in the railways and work with local authorities and industry will deliver better journeys for passengers and boost the local economy.”
