Walkers
ON SATURDAY, 16 April, 23 walkers met in Drefach Felindre for a six-mile circular walk in the area. The weather was sunny for the walk led by Steph and Terry, who live in the village, choosing a route which highlighted the historical importance of the woollen industry which led to the growth of Drefach Felindre in the late 17th century and maintained its pros-perity until the after both World Wars. They walked on tracks and footpaths used by woollen workers, travelling to and from work in the mills.Steph pointed out historical points of interest along the way, starting with a modest building which had been the home of the Adams family who emigrated to the United States in the 18th century. Two of their issue were John Adams and John Quincy Adams who became early and distinguished US presidents. The walkers passed through Drefelin, Penboyr, Cwmpengraig, Cwmhiraeth and Waungilwen, and Steph drew at-tention to the old mill buildings. A few mills still exist, producing fine woollen blankets and garments on a small scale. They retired to the Red Lion for refreshments. The next walk will be a six-mile walk on Saturday, 21 May, at Coed Pengwm, near Bridell. Details are available from Glyn on 01545 561285.
