Madam,
The letter from Dr Felix Aubel was a good illustration of the lack of knowledge of those who supported the ‘Leave’ campaign.
The judges’ ruling that Brexit must be discussed by parliament as a whole, and that the decision should not be taken by the current government alone by the use of the ‘royal prerogative’, was not an attempt to “water down what the people of these islands voted for”.
Any referendum is by definition only advisory. This can be shown from the government’s response to the House of Lords’ select committee report in 2010.
The response stated “Under the UK’s constitutional arrangements parliament must be responsible for deciding whether or not to take action in response to a referendum result”.
Whatever might have been promised during the campaign leading up to the referendum (and there were many risible examples - remember the £350m per week which was going to be spent on our NHS?) the law is quite clear.
Rather than threatening our independent judges, we should salute and praise them for upholding the law.
We might also question the thinking of those who can only say “Brexit means Brexit” - you cannot define a word by itself!
I accept the public’s decision, but I also want to know on what terms we leave the EU.
Yours etc,
John Davis, Llanfarian, Aberystwyth.
