Madam,

Contrary to what was said in Cllr Louise Hughes’ letter (‘Sense of déjà vu over council promises on views of residents’), there has been no increase in Gwynedd Council Cabinet members’ or other members’ salary levels.

In fact the salaries of Cabinet members, committee chairs and all council members have been at the same level since the beginning of 2014/15.

All county council salaries are set by the Independent Remuneration Panel for Wales and there was has been no increase this year. Individual councils were given the option of setting some of the salaries at a lower level than at present.

At the full council meeting on the 12 May, the council considered the possibility of reducing the salaries of Cabinet members and committee chairs by £3,000 per annum but decided against doing so having considered the workload, equal responsibilities and the geographical nature of the county and the need to travel to meetings.

Yours etc,

Cllr Dyfrig Siencyn, Cabinet member for performance, policy and corporate support, legal, the Welsh language, Gwynedd County Council.
