CONTRACTORS working on Aberystwyth’s Mill Street development tried to close one of the busiest roads into Aberystwyth without permission, it has emerged.

Work is taking place on Park Avenue with new traffic lights being installed, work being done on the road surface and changes to the road layout, causing congestion in town and problems for motorists trying to leave the Rheidol Retail Park.

A Ceredigion council spokesperson confirmed that the authority had intervened after it learnt that contractors Lagan Construction had put up signs saying that Park Avenue would be closed for five days from Monday, 18 July.

The council spokesperson said that had never been agreed with the authority.

The spokesperson said: “The authority was made aware on Friday, 15 July, of unauthorised signs being erected on Park Avenue notifying the public that it is to be closed.

“Following discussions with the contractor, these were removed immediately and alternative arrangements made to complete the works without the need for a closure.”

Lagan Construction was asked to comment, but none was received by the time of publication.
