Madam,

Your article in last week’s issue by Chris Betteley reporting on Penparcau councillor Brenda Haines’s warning that green spaces would disappear from Penparcau if over-development is allowed to continue is a long overdue warning from one of our elected councillors.

With the shortage of housing in the whole of the country I am all in favour of new build but ask why Tai Ceredigion Housing believes that its housing for the Aberystwyth area has to be built in Penparcau, at the expense of the little green space now available, in preference to other areas in and around Aberystwyth. Application has been made, and I believe approved, for a large private housing estate in the Piercefield Lane area of Penparcau.

The article also reported that Cllr Haines’s warning of the loss of green space had been raised in the village by residents over an application to house two large shipping containers on the site near the Boxing Club just for storage. There is great concern that diggers are now churning up what is left of the green playing area and for what purpose? Some years ago this green park land on the main Penparcau road covered a substantial area from Tycam right up to the Neuadd Goffa Memorial Hall. Re-routing of the A487 through this green park-land for road improvement and to avoid the demolition of dwellings on the Southgate side of Neuadd Goffa resulted in the loss of a very large, much-used park area for residents’ football, cricket games and much more in an open area safely overseen by passing residents when children were playing.

Penparcau is fortunate to have the use of so many community buildings at their disposal - Llwyn yr Eos Community Centre, St Anne’s Church Hall, Neuadd Goffa Memorial Hall, Boxing Club, Maes Maelor Hall, plus the large Min y Ddôl Pavilion. There isn’t any possible reason for Ceredigion County Council planners to agree to any new build or extensions that would rob residents of green space.

Yours etc,
