Madam,

There is an old saying, "none so deaf as those that don’t want to hear”, and I am afraid there is a small number of people who will not admit that, as a result of their appealing to the Vatican on three occasions, there is no longer a Catholic Church in Queen’s Road, Aberystwyth.

After a number of surveys it was considered too expensive to repair, leaving generations to come to repay the debt. After the cost of these and architects’ fees there is now very little money left in the pot, sufficient only to repair the Welsh Martyrs in Penparcau.

Yes, Queen’s Road is a prime building site and, if the bishop’s original plans had not been opposed by a small minority, there would now have been a new church, hall and presbytery.

I have it on good authority from a priest in the diocese that no-one wishes to come to Aberystwyth as a result of all the unpleasantness over the last 20 years.

There has been an overwhelming amount of care taken by the bishop and even now this minority are trying to delay work on the Welsh Martyrs site by calling in the conservation group to look for slow worms! May we have peace?

Yours etc,

M Gibbins, Heol Tyn-y-fron, Penparcau, Aberystwyth.
