LANDGIRLS, Home Guards and a photograph of Hitler were featured at Cardigan Castle’s World War II Day at the weekend.
Former landgirl Mary Bott, of Aberporth, entranced visitors with her tales of working on farms in Ceredigion during the war years. She also brought along a letter from the then Queen Elizabeth (later the Queen Mother) thanking her for her efforts.
Mary was joined by Jean McKay, from Parcllyn, who told stories of her time working in the War Office in London.
While castle volunteers led by Glen Johnson, Huw Davies and Nick Wallace gave visitors laughs with their Home Guard antics, there was also the real thing in attendance.
Glen Thomas, from Felinwynt, wore his father Joshua’s original Home Guard uniform worn on duty in Blaenannerch during the war. And visitors were also captivated by a photo showing Hitler greeting a young German girl – the grandmother of Mark Thomas, from Penparc.
Carla Thomas, who died a few years ago, was a member of Hitler Youth and her story was passed on by her granddaughter-in-law and castle receptionist Michelle Thomas.
