Madam,
I recently attended a support group meeting in Swansea for sufferers of dystonia.
Dystonia is a neurological disorder which causes muscles to contract involuntarily, often with considerable pain.
The condition is not lifethreatening but there is no cure. Many sufferers find relief from their symptoms by using prescribed medication and/or botox injections to control the affected muscles.
At the meeting there was a range of dystonias: generalised, where many parts of the body are affected; blepharospasm, which affects the muscles controlling the eyelids; focal dystonia affecting the hand and arm, as well as cervical (neck) dystonia – which I suffer from.
Looking at the statistics of how many dystonia sufferers there are in Wales, it’s very likely that some readers of this newspaper also suffer from the condition.
I’m sure they will know of the Dystonia Society, based in London; there is also a Facebook Group – S Wales Dystonia Support Group – which is quite active.
This letter is intended to seek out readers who may be interested in making contact locally with others in order to share experiences and support. Facebook isn’t for everyone and coffee and a chat may be more appropriate.
Could I ask anyone interested to e-mail the Cambrian News on [email protected] and they will then pass on my e-mail address.
Yours etc,
Name and address supplied.
