The Welsh Government has admitted it is considering how it can improve road safety in Ponterwyd, after one resident said he had been left a “prisoner in his home” over safety concerns.

Kieran Burling, who saw a wall outside his home damaged after it was hit by a vehicle, has been urging authorities to do more to improve road safety on the A44 through Ponterwyd, saying the road is currently too narrow.

He said that without a pavement and the narrow road, pedestrians trying to either walk along the road or cross it were being put in danger and said there were daily incidents where large lorries struggled to pass each other in opposite directions.

Mr Burling has won backing from MP Ben Lake and local Ceredigion county councillor Rhodri Davies, and a Welsh Government spokesperson said that officers were now considering safety on the road, as well as looking at the possibility of providing a pavement.

The spokesperson said: “A review of the safety of the trunk road network has begun and will include the A44 through Ponterwyd.

“Work has also begun on the feasibility of providing a pavement through the village.”

Cllr Davies said while there had been improvements to the road through the village, he said it was accepted that more were needed.
