A LAMPETER councillor has said he is “very sceptical” about the benefits of introducing a one-way system in College Street.

Town mayor Cllr Hag Harris has previously forecast traffic congestion and “disastrous consequences” for local traders after Ceredigion County Council introduced bollards on the pavement.

Highways officers insisted such measures were necessary to prevent illegal parking on pavements and safeguard pedestrians.

However, Cllr Harris argued that such steps would hamper deliveries and lead to the eventual elimination of all on-street parking in College Street.

At a meeting last week between Cllr Harris, fellow county councillor Ivor Williams and highways officers Phil Jones and Rhodri Llwyd a number of possible solutions were put forward.

These included investigating the possibility of moving the college wall back to allow a wider carriageway, plus narrowing the pavement, as well as providing a ‘loading bay’ on the shops’ side of the street in the area of the Old Post Office.

However, the most radical suggestion was the introduction of a one-way scheme to include College Street, although it was felt the consequences on other streets and junctions in Lampeter would have to be examined first.
