Madam,
I suppose most people are now fed up with ‘Brexit’ but that doesn’t stop the media covering every aspect depending on which side they are on! Clearly Patrick O’Brien is a ‘remainer’ and the last two columns he has written are full of evidence to support his stance but like so many journalists they ‘cherrypick’.
I have yet to see a wellbalanced argument taking in all the evidence to provide an unbiased account of what really is best for Britain and particularly Wales. Perhaps the truth is nobody really knows. The only one thing that is clear is the UK as a nation decided by a referendum to leave the EU, with a majority of nearly four per cent, over 1.27 million voters. Parliament should not ignore this result. Many MPs appear ‘hell bent’ on frustrating the process. Why?
Mr O’Brien appears to argue with himself! He criticises some newspapers for trying to influence voters and yet he is doing exactly the same. He uses unemployment as an argument for remaining within the EU, frightening people into believing thousands of jobs will be lost, when in reality he doesn’t know; in fact nobody really knows. He uses a quote from Mark Drakeford that a no-deal Brexit would be disastrous for Wales where average incomes are the lowest in Europe. So if that’s the position having been in the EU for the last 45 years shouldn’t we try something different to make the situation better?
To ‘nail my colours to the mast’ I don’t really know what will be best for Britain, leave or remain, but I do believe in democracy.
Yours etc, Eddie Ffoulkes-Jones Trefenter, Aberystwyth
