A Ceredigion schoolboy’s rap about his love for his home county has landed him a cash prize.

Osian Jones from Ysgol Ciliau Parc in Ciliau Aeron has won an Ysgol Hip Hop competition set up to celebrate Dydd Miwsig Cymru/Welsh Language Music Day.

His entry with the rap Caru Ceredigion wowed the judge, Welsh rapper Mr Phormula, and was selected as the winner out of more than 100 applicants.

The Ysgol Hip Hop competition was launched in December to encourage school children across Wales to harness their musical flair and create a Welsh language rap in honour of Dydd Miwsig Cymru.

Mr Phormula created a number of beats, encouraging children to take part.

Initially the competition was open to schools for children to create and send in their videos in groups, but with the lockdown rules tightening over Christmas, the competition was extended to children learning at home. In the end they received 109 applicants from schools all over Wales.

These were narrowed down to a shortlist of eight entries, but Osian was crowned as the overall winner. Osian has won £250 for educational resources for his Ysgol Ciliau Parc, and his rap was played on S4C’s Stwnsh Sadwrn.

The competition asked primary school children to write a verse of a rap song with a parent, guardian or grandparent and practise during home lesson time.

The theme of the competition and rap was ‘What the Welsh language means to you and your area’, which links to the Welsh Government’s policy ambitions to grow the Welsh language for future generations.
