Madam,
Liz Saville Roberts may be right in suggesting Westminster is not fit for purpose (‘Chasing Unicorns is not a plan to achieve Brexit’, Cambrian News, 7 February). Certainly it seems incapable of implementing Brexit as instructed by the people in the referendum two and a half years ago. It would however help if she and others got their facts right and stopped disseminating ‘fake news’ about Brexit. Ms Roberts states categorically that ‘No Deal’ is off the table as if that were a fact. On the contrary ‘No Deal’ is not off the table for at least three reasons. Firstly the vote to which she refers was not binding on the government and was merely an indicative vote indicating that at that point in time most MPs thought it would be better to have a deal.
Secondly, only an idiot would enter a negotiation on anything by announcing to the other side that he or she would not walk away regardless of what was on offer.
Thirdly, the law of the land currently states that the UK will leave the EU on 29 March with or without a deal. That can only be altered by fresh legislation which would normally require to be initiated by the government. Unless and until that happens, ‘No Deal’ remains the default position if nothing else is agreed with the EU, as Ms Roberts must be well aware.
The public cannot be expected to have faith in politicians if they are constantly putting forward opinions as if they were facts and making exaggerated and false statements to promote their own political views. This is an arrogant, self-serving way to treat the public and increasingly seems to be the norm in modern politics. If politicians don’t get their act together and get us out of the EU by 29 March, the interest in politics engendered by Brexit will soon be replaced by the indifference and apathy we were familiar with in the past. Perhaps that is what they want - they certainly don’t seem to like the public telling them what to do by way of a referendum. That seems to be a bit too democratic for their liking!
Yours etc, Alan MacMaster, Barmouth.
