PLANS to introduce pay and display arrangements at a car park in Borth y Gest have sparked outrage from campaigners.
This month Gwynedd Council’s Cabinet has approved the new Parking Order for the county which means some car parks which were free of charge, will now be turned into a pay and display area.
A petition with over 600 signatures was submitted to object to proposals to change arrangements at the Borth y Gest car park with a further 28 separate objections.
However, Gwynedd Council rubber-stamped the plans to introduce a pay and display arrangements at the car park which will be introduced over the next few months.
A campaign was launched at the beginning of the year to oppose the plans and many now are concerned on how it will impact tourism in Borth y Gest.
Alistair Owen, who visits the area from Telford said: “We have been coming for a number of years to the area and one of the highlights is popping down to Borth y Gest and a lovely walk along the coastal path. This car park would not pay back the revenue cost for years but would damage the attraction and pleasure for both residents and visitors alike for many more after that.”
Sharon Dimmer from Cannock, said: “This would be a disastrous move for the local businesses, I go down to Borth y Gest on a regular basis for a short dog walk and a cuppa, if I have to pay for parking I’ll find somewhere else to go. Ridiculous.”
A Gwynedd Council spokesperson said: “In terms of Borth y Gest, the council held discussions with a number of local residents who expressed concerns and following consideration of a number of constructive suggestions, changes were made to the proposal for this car park.
“The council will also be happy to consider the on-street parking provision in Borth y Gest.”
