A REDUCTION in the opening hours of Aberystwyth’s Plascrug Leisure Centre is leading to “overcrowding” in the swimming pool, sparking safety fears.

Council chiefs have been urged to reconsider the decision after parents claimed it was more difficult for youngsters to use the pool because of the cost-cutting exercise.

One parent Mike Krawec told the Cambrian News: “The issues that are happening are due to Ceredigion council’s short-sighted decision to reduce the overall opening hours of the centre, and the fact that they’ve decided to enforce those changes on the weekends is even more baffling. The decision really does fly in the face of the population being encouraged to lead an active and healthy lifestyle.

“I think, and I would suspect that a lot of people would agree with me, that there are not enough activities in Aberystwyth for children or young people to do and the reduction of opening hours of the centre is another step backwards.

“The council should be looking at alternative ways to keep the doors open and not looking for the easy way out as they have done.

“I propose that these changes should be reversed with immediate effect and the old opening hours should return. I don’t see why residents of Ceredigion should settle for anything less.”
