A CLARACH caravan park owner has described the moments he narrowly avoided being hit by a four-ton static caravan which came hurtling towards him in high winds.
Thomas Scarrott, owner of Clarach Bay Holiday Village, told the Cambrian News that between 15 and 20 caravans on his site are believed to have either been severely damaged or destroyed in last Thursday’s 94mph winds, described by some as a “tornado”.
But Mr Scarrott, who estimated the damage to be worth “hundreds of thousands of pounds”, said he was relieved nobody was seriously hurt or killed after five static display caravans, weighing “three to four tons” each, were picked up by the wind and left in piles of wood, broken glass and sheared metal.
“I was walking past the caravans and they nearly hit me,” said Mr Scarrott, who was walking to his car at the time.
“I saw the wind had picked up, so I thought I would make sure none of the caravans needed ‘securing’. But the winds picked up a little more, so I went to check on my parents and grandparents.
“I was walking down to them, and then everything descended into complete and utter carnage — one of the caravans was picked up and started rolling towards me."
